По дну ущелья, сузившись до 100 м, несет густую взвесь песка мощная Колорадо, уступающая в США по размерам только Миссисипи и Миссури. Скорость течения реки здесь доходит до 4 м/сек (15 км/час), но средняя глубина потока превышает 5 м, местами достигая 15 м. Путешествовать по этой реке можно только вниз. Такие путешествия опасны, но тем они и привлекательны. Ночи на берегу реки, где трудно пристать к берегу и найти место для ночевки, — незабываемы. Случается и днем: вода реки вдруг становится черной, густые сумерки охватывают все вокруг — от края до края ущелье заполняет темно-серая зловещая туча. В стены каньона с ожесточением бьют молнии. Дождь льет на дно ущелья, казалось бы, нескончаемым потоком. Но гроза проходит так же неожиданно, как и началась, не слышно даже удаляющегося и затихающего грома. Снова над головой яркое небо. Грандиозную панораму Большого Каньона и сверху, с края обрыва, тоже трудно охватить глазом. Красноватый, неземной пейзаж окутан синей дымкой, в которой то отчетливо, то едва вырисовываются очертания гигантских пагод, пирамид, башен, крепостных стен…
Этот колоссальный сказочный город разноцветен. Пласты, слагающие останцы, то красные, то желтые. Под солнечными лучами некоторые розовеют, другие, ушедшие в тень, синие, почти черные.
Кто знает, может быть, испанцы, назвав р. Колорадо «цветной», имели в виду многоцветье обнажений Большого Каньона, а не саму реку. Ниточку реки с полуторакилометровой высоты трудно отыскать сумерке провала.
Большой Каньон р. Колорадо — грандиознейшее образование. Его длина — около 350 км, ширина — от 6 до 28 км.
Каньон этот образовался не в итоге катаклизмов, что казалось бы естественным, а в результате медленной, но упорной работы реки. Около 10 млн. лет тому назад, где-то в середине плиоцена, Колорадо текла здесь по огромной низменной равнине, которая затем начала очень медленно подниматься. Река несколько ускорила свой бег. Поднятие земли продолжалось, но река успевала промывать себе русло. Почти не меняя направления, она прорезала себе путь быстрее, чем скрытые силы земли поднимали поверхность, ныне именуемую плато Кайбаб.
Но река, действуй она в одиночку, прорезала бы лишь очень узкое ущелье. Расширить каньон в среднем до 16 км помогли оползни, талые воды и ожесточенные летние грозы с ливнями. Песок и камень скатывались в быструю реку и становились абразивами, помогающими углублять дно реки и самого каньона. И в настоящее время Колорадо ежесуточно выносит из каньона в среднем по полмиллиона тонн глины и песка. Такой же груз камней река перекатывает по своему дну. И так — из года в год.
В результате этой титанической работы не просто прорезана земная кора на глубину более полутора километров — река создала здесь едва ли не самые полные в мире геологические обнажения, на которых представлена история Земли за 2,5 млрд. лет.
Большой Каньон Колорадо — это одновременно и захватывающее зрелище, и богатейший материал для исследований. Обнажения эти многократно описывались и изучались. Их продолжают исследовать и будут изучать еще бесконечно долго.
Первые (сверху) 150 м занимают серые, буро-желтые и красные кай-бабские известняк и песчаник с обилием морских моллюсков, кораллов и губок. Далее — стометровый слой желтоватого песчаника, под ним — семидесятиметровый слой красного песчано-глинистого сланца уже с отпечатками пресноводных организмов, а также примитивных хвойных и папоротников.
